Nach etwa 15 Jahren Mitgliedschaft im informellen Interlis-Kernteam und zwei Jahren in der offiziellen Nachfolgegruppe SOGI GGMM, habe ich mich kürzlich aus diesem Interlis-Gremium zurückgezogen. Der Grund liegt hauptsächlich darin, dass meine Prioritäten in der Geo-Normierung in Themen liegen, die in dieser Arbeitsgruppe nur peripher abgedeckt werden. Nichts destotrotz möchte ich aus diesem Anlass meine Gedanken zur Vergangenheit und Zukunft von Interlis festhalten.

The use of WMS/WMTS layers in a QGIS Cloud map project can significantly degrade the performance of the map display. I have already discussed how to counter this problem in an earlier post. One of the solutions is to load external WMS as background layers. The problem with this approach, however, is that only one WMS background layer can be loaded at a time. If further WMS layers are to be loaded into the map at the same time, this approach cannot be used.

To achieve this, the appearance of the map view was changed using CSS. In this post, I will describe exactly what this is and how it works. The appearance of the QGIS Cloud Web Client is controlled via CSS. CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets.

With QGIS Cloud Pro it is possible to change the appearance and behaviour of the QGIS Cloud Web Client via CSS. You can easily manipulate the colour of frames and fonts, etc. An example that is not obvious is displaying the legend in a fixed location on the map. In this way, the legend can be made a fixed part of the map in QGIS Cloud QWC2. In the basic configuration of QGIS Cloud QWC2 the legend of a layer is not permanently displayed.

The Swisstopo services can be used free of charge for commercial purposes since March 1st. In this blog article I want to show how these high quality data can be published on qgiscloud.com. Swisstopo-Services The Swisstopo WMTS services are tiled raster data. Due to the prior tiling, the loading times are significantly reduced. WMTS data are used when an up-to-date background is always required. For publication as a background layer on the QGIS Cloud Platform, the National Maps and the Swissimage orthophoto are very interesting.

QGIS Cloud (www.qgiscloud.com) is a platform which provides a convenient geodata infrastructure including database, web services and web maps in the cloud. Recently, Sourcepole implemented the possibility to enable web-based editing in published maps. This blog post shows how to enable editing in QGIS cloud pro maps. We start with my_edit_project.qgs, a project in QGIS desktop containing a background layer and a point vector layer (trees). We upload the data to QGIS Cloud using the QGIS Cloud plugin and publish the project.

In printed maps, having several coordinate grids over one map is a very usefull feature. For instance using a meter system as output CRS, it is nice to display a latitude / longitude grid as well. Until now, the QGIS print composer allowed only one coordinate grid per composer map and it was restricted to the map output CRS. Having that multigrid / multiCRS feature in QGIS Enterprise since 13.04 already, I’ve recently found the time to port it into the QGIS developer version.

Packaging PostGIS dev releases with Docker We recently added support for GML curves to PostGIS, which enables TinyOWS to deliver WFS requests with curve geometries. More on this in a later post. This enhancement is in the current PostGIS developement version (SVN master) and not released yet. To enable our customer testing this functionality, we had to build packages for their server environment which is Ubuntu Precise with UbuntuGIS repositories. After working with Linux LXC containers and it’s predecessor VServer for years, Docker was a logical choice for a clean reproducible build environment.

NTv2 transformations with QGIS

Datum transformations with grid shift files are used in several countries to convert coordinates between different datums. In Switzerland, datum transformation using the NTv2 method is important because of the upcoming conversion between the LV03 system and the new LV95 system. Up to now, doing coordinate transformations with grid shift files was possible in QGIS, but unconvenient. To use an NTv2 transformation in QGIS, the grid shift file needs to be placed in a directory where proj4 can find it (usually /usr/share/proj on Linux and OSGeo4W\share\proj on Windows).

The city of Winterthur recently launched their new public map portal, based on Mapfish Appserver. Some of the features are outlined in the online help (in German). Mobile users are redirected to the OL3 Mobile Viewer, which is based on OpenLayers 3 and jQuery Mobile. To have a look at it from your desktop browser follow this link. In contrary to the desktop version, most of the background layers are delivered as tiles and only topic layers are full size WMS requests.

Nowadays, most computers have several processor cores. However, most computer programs are still designed to only use one processing unit. As a convenient and portable way of writing software using all the available processing power, Qt provides the excellent QtConcurrent framework. In 2010, a Google Summer of Code project examined the suitabilty of using Qt concurrent for rendering the map image in QGIS using several processor cores. Following that approach, each layer renders its image in a separate thread.

Printing is always one of the more difficult parts in a web mapping application. There are solutions like the MapFish Print module or the built-in QGIS WYSIWYG PDF printing. But very often users do not want only a map on their print output, but collected information stored in a database with images, etc. - and a matching map. This is the domain of database reporting tools like JasperReports. They provide desktop tools for designing complex reports with texts, graphics, images, tables, etc.

installing Postgis 2.0 under Debian wheezy

We’ll be using Postgis2.0 from UbuntuGIS, which has packages for a number of recent Ubuntu releases. Since Ubuntu precise has libc6 2.14 and Debian wheezy only 2.13 we fall back on Ubuntu oneiric for packages, which also has libc6 2.13. However Postgis 2.0 in UbuntuGIS depends on a lot of llibraries which were in squeeze but live in wheezy under a higher version. Therefore we’ll install a lot of packages from Debian squeeze.

Our favorite WFS-T server complement of UMN Mapserver is TinyOWS. We like the simplicity of it so much, that we packaged it for Ubuntu and added it to OSGeoLive. Installation is easy: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntugis/ubuntugis-unstable sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install tinyows The simplicity is a little bit too much, when it comes to serve multiple WFS-T on the same server. There is only one configuration file, but we want a configuration for each service.

Most of the functionality is working again and the globe is now compatible with osgEarth 1.0 up to 1.3. The bad news is, that the globe plugin is not working on Windows with OSGeo4W. It seems that one of the OSGeo4W libraries (GDAL?) is compiled with an incompatible MS compiler version. Christmas holidays are coming…

For providing maps via WMS over the internet, it is important to generate image files with a small size. Because normally, most of the perceived WMS delay comes from transfering large images files over the internet (and not from map rendering itself). Therefore, QGIS server supports the conversion of png24 and png32 images into png8, therefore generating a file with only 1/3 resp. 1/4 of the original size (but with lower quality).

Creating a shaded relief map from digital elevation data is a nice way to create a backround map for web mapping or other GIS work. Thanks to the know-how and the funding from the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit, QGIS now has a sophisticated function for relief map generation. The method is described in detail in an paper by Marc-André Bünzli. An important part of the method is the choice of the elevation colors.

QGIS already offers a lot of possibilities to visualize raster data (contrast enhancement, color map, handling of transparent pixels, …) Last year, Radim Blazek refactored the raster provider interface and added on-the-fly reprojection support for rasters to QGIS. Very cool! One of the few things currently missing in QGIS raster layer is the possibility to have other resampling types than nearest neighbour. The problem is that rasters appear pixelated when zooming further than the source raster resolution.

SVG symbols in QGIS with modifiable colors

SVG markers are a popular way to symbolise points in QGIS. Predefined markers are available in $PREFIX/share/qgis/svg and it is straightforward to add new symbols or to create own symbols with a vector graphics program (e.g. Inkscape). A disadvantage so far was the need to create different versions of an svg file to have the same symbol in several colors. A recent change in QGIS now introduces the possibility to insert parameter tags into the svg file and QGIS is going to replace them with the values for fill color, outline color and outline width.

OpenLayers plugin visits code sprint

A short visit and 7 hours train ride to the OpenLayers code sprint mainly for a presentation at the Swiss MapFish user group meeting in Lausanne, resulted in a new release of the QGIS OpenLayers plugin. The OpenLayers plugin adds WebKit based layers to QGIS and ships with OpenStreetMap-, Google- and Yahoo-Layers. Changes in this release: Update to OpenLayers trunk Google Layers using API V3 (no API key necessary) Code refactoring for adding new layer types with one line of code (and some HTML…) The next planned step is integrating this plugin with the very nice Openlayers Overview plugin from Luiz Motta.

Web based printing with QGIS server

QGIS server is already known as a full featured, WMS 1.3 compliant map server (see e.g. ETHZ, Linfiniti or 3LIZ). For the city of Uster, Switzerland, Sourcepole recently extended QGIS server with the possibility to use the print composer via WMS in order to offer printing functionality for web maps. A very nice GeoExt based client can be found at http://gis.uster.ch/webgis/. Andreas Neumann used and extended the GeoExt PrintProvider and PrintExtent classes which allows the user to intuitively select a layout, extent, scale, rotation and resolution for printing.

Testing UMN Mapfiles with QGIS

The Sunday night session of the QGIS hackfest resulted in a new release of the Mapfile Tools plugin. This QGIS plugin allows you to display an UMN Mapserver mapfile in QGIS without running a Mapserver instance. It depends only on Mapscript (apt-get install python-mapscript on Debian/Ubuntu) and allows you to zoom and pan on the mapfile layer. In release 0.6, an output window has been added, which shows error messages and detailed layer information.

Marco, Matthias and me spent three days at the QGIS hackfest in Wroclaw (pictures). There I got the time to work on the QGIS globe plugin and made a presentation of the current state. As soon as the threading branch (Martin Dobias’ Google of Summer project) is merged into trunk, the globe should make its way into trunk as well. In the meantime you can compile the QGIS branch from guthub to test the globe.

For data collection, it is a common situation to work with a laptop or a phone offline in the field. Upon returning to the network, the changes need to be synchronized with the master data source, e.g. a PostGIS database. If several persons are working simultaneously on the same datasets, it is difficult to merge the edits by hand, even if people don’t change the same features. Therefore, Mathias Walker implemented an offline plugin for QGIS.

Kurz nach dem Release von QGIS 1.5, das mit vielen neuen Funktionen aufwartet, ist auch der QGIS Mapserver in der Version 1.0 verfügbar. Der QGIS Mapserver ist ein WMS Server, der ursprünglich am Institut für Kartographie der ETH Zürich entwickelt wurde. In der Version 1.0 können neben der Symbolisierierung mit SLD auch QGIS-Projekte direkt als WMS publiziert werden. Dank der von Sourcepole entwickelten nativen Unterstützung von QGIS-Projekten, können mit QGIS erstellte Karten ohne Konvertierungverluste direkt als WMS-Dienst publiziert werden.

Our sample application using the mapping application framework Mapfish with Ruby on Rails is finally available on GitHub. We also updated the Ruby MapFish server to the newest MapFish protocol coming in the next release and contributed additional documentation.

Mapfish is mapping application framework based on OpenLayers for the mapping part, and on ExtJS for the GUI (widgets) part. The server part in version 1.0 is available as Java and Python implementation. We contributed recently an additional server implementation written as a Ruby on Rails plugin.
